Post subject:  USB FDD for 64HDD-PC
Hi!

I'm user of 64HDD Professional. I have for this one MS-DOS (7.10) computer.
I'm trying to use USB 3,5" FDD on this... Why 64HDD category? It's 64HDD computer.

What's my problem:

I added to config.sys driver usbaspi1.sys for detecting USB devices.

At starting computer is FDD found, but after are two errors:

ERROR: TARGET DEVICE NOT FOUND
ERROR: DRIVER RESIDES SINCE USB FDD WAS DETECTED

...and I was trying more PC-DOS forums, but everywhere is writting only about USB CDROM etc.

Can anybody help me which driver and how to install it for USB FDD as drive B: ?

Hmm.. I don't have any experience with USB FDD's .. but judging from the name of the driver it seems to be an ASPI driver. AFAIK, ASPI is for CDR only (and some tape devices) and has nothing to do with FDDs. What you want is a driver that "emulates" FDD system calls and redirect them to your USB FDD. I'm not even sure there exists any generic driver for that as I don't think USB FDDs have a standard such as ASPI for CDR. You might end up hunting proprietary drivers for your FDD. But then again, I'm only guessing :P

Here's solution:

Add this line to config.sys:

device=c:\dos\usbaspi1.sys /v /u

I selected UHCI 'cause my DOS computer has only USB1.1,
if you have USB other version, here are parameters to replace /u:

/E (EHCI USB 2.0)
/O (OHCI USB 1.1 Add-on)
/U (UHCI USB 1.1 Integrated)

ignore errors:

ERROR: TARGET DEVICE NOT FOUND
ERROR: DRIVER RESIDES SINCE USB FDD WAS DETECTED

Please note that main floppy in computer marked as A: will be replaced with USB FDD, so will be not accessible.

I tried not to set this drive to B: - don't know how, can anybody help me?

Interesting... So your FDD is actually emulating a CDR then :P

If the usbaspi1.sys is already substituting the A: drive for you without loading mscdex or similar, then it's entirely up to the driver to choose a drive letter. Are you sure there is no switch for setting the drive letter?

No, no...

Now I have USB FDD, HDD & CDR.
At booting is active standard FDD, so booting from USB FDD is not possible.
But for me it is good -when I'm restarting computer I need not to remove diskette from USB FDD 'cause USB FDD is active after loading driver.
Then replaces standard FDD - for this I want (it's not important) to change letter of standard FDD from A: to B: 'cause after loading USB driver is not possible to use standard FDD... but it doesn't make me cry :-)

Ah ok. You should be able to do that in BIOS. Select Floppy A: <NONE> and Floppy B: <FDD 1.44 Mb> or something similar...

This computer has very old BIOS, I think.
It's not possible to entering BIOS, as I know, if I'm trying any key at keyboard (Del, F2, PgUp, PgDn, etc.) it reports keyboard error and gives me only one choice: F1 BOOT...

So, I can't access BIOS, it's old Compaq computer (but customized by adding memory, HDD and CD-ROM) with Pentium MMX processor.

Hmm.. I used to work with Compaq PC's back in the day.. IIRC the BIOS Setup resided on a small partition on the HDD. If that has been removed, chances are you can not change the BIOS settings, unless you dig up some old Compaq tool on the net. I think it was the F10 key to access the setup from the POST screen....
